5 Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken (and What to Do)

A garage door spring does the heavy lifting — literally. It counterbalances the weight of the door so the opener (and you) can move it easily. When a spring breaks, the door suddenly feels like the couple-hundred-pound object it really is. Here’s how to tell, and what to do next.

1. You heard a loud bang

A snapping torsion spring often makes a sound like a firecracker or a heavy metal clank from the garage — sometimes when no one’s even using the door. If you heard it and the door won’t open normally afterward, a broken spring is the most likely cause.

2. The door won’t open — or only opens a few inches

With a broken spring, the opener can’t overcome the door’s weight. It may strain, hum, reverse, or lift the door a few inches before stopping. Forcing it can damage the opener, so it’s best to stop and call.

3. The door slams down or feels extremely heavy

If you pull the manual release and the door drops fast or feels like dead weight, the counterbalance is gone. That’s a safety hazard — keep hands, cars, and people clear.

4. You can see a gap in the spring

On a torsion spring (the one mounted on a bar above the door), a break usually shows as a two-to-three-inch gap in the coil. On extension springs (along the tracks), you may see a spring hanging loose or a snapped cable.

5. The top section bends or the cables are loose

When one spring fails on a two-spring door, the door can lift crookedly, the top panel may flex, or the lift cables may go slack and jump the drum.
